Streetboarding has been around a while, and before the Ismael Calvos, the Sergi Nicolas’ and the Gabi Muñoz’s, we had a slew of pro’s pushing the early years of the sport. We here at Red Pen Streetboard Magazine have decided to super sleuth their asses and catch up with them to see what they are up to now. First up it’s Fish Disc legend, Matt ” slides and Grinds” Kirsch, last seen obliterating rails and boxes in Air biscuit and the now classic “Hellburger”. If you’ve not seen it, our friends at Streetboarding.com have go it here for your pleasure hellburger.zip

So, Matt, tell all these guys where you reside?
I’m living in Chicago for now, but I’m on the move. I live right by Wilson skate park, which has great bowls.
You not ridden for a while. How long has it been?
I stopped snakeboarding after knee surgery in 1999 and just started up again this summer, so wow. A long time.

What did you do in between ?
I rode a flexdeck and a long board down hills in Santa Monica where I was working in TV. I would skate here and there, but mostly just to cruise the strip in Venice. I never saw a snakeboard once! I did jam out on some weird disconnected footplate thing.
What made you grab a new board and start again?
Andy Cass called me and said he was working on some boards and I got excited about trying one and getting back at it, so he sent me a Highland Flare. I was totally blown away when I saw it. It was so awesome to start up again, it has been a great summer.
What you think of the sport now?
The new boards are so much more solid than the old plastic. When I’m carving it feels alot more stable under my feet. I found again that snakeboards still had strap issues until I got the Neobrains, which rule. The tricks I’ve seen are pretty insane. Some of the stair sets guys are doing…wow. Crazy. The mega roll in was intense, those guys are impressive! I still call it snakeboarding by the way, I’m just old school I guess.

What was it like in the old SBUSA days?
Its funny, but they were similar to how it is now- only now riders go way bigger and the boards have gotten a lot better. I still am an anomaly at the park and probably 99% of the skaters there have never seen a snakeboard before. Kara Guire and a few others rides around Chicago, but the sport is still undergound.
You guys used to get paid and travel all over for free?
I actually never got paid. I got travel paid for but I was 17 and lived on help from the folks. It was great to see the world at a young age, especially the Worlds in Munich, that was great. It sure beats sitting in class!
How was it filming for Hellburger?
That’s one classic video. My last big handrail. I loved hanging with the Cali-snakers back in the day. I was in high school and traveling was the best. It really put things in perspective for me.

Slides OR Grinds?
Carves bro, carves. I stay away from rails but I do enjoy killing some coping. I love to snake the bowl really, really fast. When I get to some hills, I am going to bomb them.
Now you’re back, what’s your aim?
I am enjoying carving bowls and pipes and some hills but thats about it. My knee is still a piece of shit and I have to be really, really nice to it - its such a baby. I am starting to work on a documentary of the sport with a friend, but only just beginning. We have some seriously ridiculous footage of our Wisconsin team ‘Fish Disc’ and I’m sure we could find some other snakers out there with their own stories. The sport is obviously on the rise.
You still wear jeans as big as back in the day?
Nice, I did wear some large xtra large pants, whoa. That was how the cali snakeboarders did things when I went out to the “Crazy Couch” competitions and they just kept getting bigger and bigger… Nowadays its all about the skinny jeans, which make more sense for going fast. I usually wear spandex jumpsuits.
Cool man thanks for your time - Any last words ?
I am going to try and make it to the worlds next year and look forward to meeting some of the snakers rippin it up. I snaked pretty much by myself this summer and would like to have some sessions… Thanks to all the hardcore snakeboarders who have kept the sport alive through hard work and passion. Also, get every rip stick kid to convert to the snakeboard. As a snaker, it is your duty to do so. Tear it up, later dudes!
