So first up when the last issue out ?

Just over a year.
How come it’s taken so long?

It just takes a while to get the footy together and people motivated to skate.  Obviously I wanna make sure I got some good footy to use.  Although its worth mentioning that Simon’s been a big help in filming and constantly drop boxing new footy of him and Dai from Brizzo.
When you first started what was the aim of it?

The aim was to try and push the UK scene, the whole point was that with each issue all the riders would have to do better tricks than the last issue and so push themselves and to get people inspired to ride for each issue.  Also to show the world what the UK scene is about.
How do you think UK scene differs from the rest of the world?

It’s different, I think we have a good scene, but its really lacking the next generation and its been a long time since I’ve seen some young talent emerging.  Saying that we’ve had some young guys coming to the sessions from Bristol.  Enjoying themselves, but also pushing themselves at each session.
I’ve just watched it with you, and it’s definitely a lot more complete and polished than previous issues. Personally cos of a lot of variety.  Do you think this is the best issue yet ?

Yeah I think so, I really like #4 and how that turned out but yeah I think this is probably the best one.  Its taken me so long to get around to editing it and it’s been at times when I’m massively uninspired and when I’m like that I can’t edit cos nothing good will come out of it.  But once I got into it I always wanna make it as good as I possibly can and I’m pleased with how it turned out.
What is so difficult about editing ?

With most videos I make I like to have an objective of how I want the video to turn out before I start filming.   Whereas with Overcast it ends up being just a collection of footy from different sessions some of which I have no control over cos I wasn’t there.  So the difficulty is trying to come up with an edit that makes sense for the viewer when they’re watching it…  because I think that’s important when editing and also making sure you pick the right music not only for each section but to maintain a nice flow over the whole video.
What are some of the choons in the video and how did you go about choosing them?

As you may notice from previous Overcasts there are always a couple of choons I use that are related to the overcast theme.  i.e.: the weather.   So I’ve done that again with this one, then also included a mixture of choons, some of which I’ve always wanted to use in edits and some I’ve spent ages choosing the right choon to fit the part.
for example some of the artists in this issue include, Vast Aire, Mac de Marco, Bonobo some classic BEASTIE boys and some Rolling stones, and maybe even a small trace of R Kelly.
Do you have a, for want of a better expression, a wank bank full of choons that you want to use in edits at some point?

Yeah Ive got a folder in my iTunes where I collect potentially suitable choons for future edits, but for when I’m on the go  I either fill up my iPhone notes or have even been known to take screen shots of what I’ve been playing just to help me remember.
Who’s impressed you the most?

Two people that have stood out for me, firstly Dai Hare, cos his skating’s really come on in the last year or so, and I think he’s got some really good shots in this issue, and also Josh Newman…He took the biggest beating to film one trick on a dodgy kink rail.
Yeah that weekend was hella fun, what’s your favourite sesh that you were at ?

Probably that weekend…cos we had a load of the guys over at our place, it was sunny at the weekend and its way more fun cruising the streets finding new spots and just hanging out…

So Max, you just got back from LA…Why were you out there?

Well my dad and my brother moved there a while ago, really I head over to visit them. I guess it’s handy that its in the land of eternal sunshine and smooth concrete
How long were you out there for?

2 weeks, a week with my brother in LA and then a week further south in San Diego
Where my dad is working
Is it really that much better to skate there than Europe?

I guess that depends where in Europe you live. The street spots are not as condensed like they are in somewhere like BCN. So if you want street skating a car is essential. But for me it’s concrete park central, and I do like a nice transition
Really? I thought you were more a manual pad and gaps sort of guy..
So you met up with some other of the crew out there
who and how were the sessions?

Yeah Sergi happened to be there on his never ending vacation (fucker). As well as Yago Ferrer who’s been trying to get more riders around there. One day we even had 4 guys riding, which is unheard of in SoCal since the L4D days hahahaha
The sessions were awesome, skating with the best people pushes you to ride harder, even if you do want a nice relaxing holiday haha
Yeah skate trips and holidays DO NOT mix…Did you meet up with the legend Rick Lowe?

Hahahaha not a chance man, god keeps us apart by always fucking something up. Usually ricks work schedule . hopefully next time!!!
Whats the reaction like to Streetboarding out there? I mean it is in the depths of nail file country..

Dude I had a ninety percent positive reaction , the skaters over there seem to be more comfortable with their sexuality and don’t hate what’s different so readily.
You think it may be a generational thing? A lot of even 16-17 year olds never experienced Snakeboard and the whole “toy” thing…

Yeah even I called it gay when I first saw one when I was a kid… Who knew? I think it’s generational and also that the skate culture there is seen as more positive by the public. The hate is not so apparent. That’s to an outsider of course
Yeah I’m sure it’s all kushty on the surface, but some of them have basements full of Rollerbladers being tended to by The Gimp…

So you hit La Jolla..I remember it being so much more Gnar in real life when I saw it…First impressions?

That shit scares the crap out of me, I’m no street skater at the best of times. To be honest I was happy just to finish the session in one piece.
Did you hit the smaller rail too?

Yeah had a quick session there too, both of those rails are perfect. I can see why they’re so popular
Did Sergi hit it too?

Yeah he had a few goes too, he’s gotta do another month there so was just chilling. If you can call lip slides down 14 stairs a chilled session hahaha
Ha ha, I can’t wait to see what footy he comes back with…Ok bro that’s about it…Any shout outs?

Ok brotherman, Let’s get this started. What’s your hometown?

Ochtrup, but now I moved to Münster, finally. Was skating here since 2003 anyway so it was time to make the move.

Not sure about how famous the skateparks are, but there are sometimes some skateboarding pros coming for demos and stuff. and there’s also a big part of the german skateboarding business loceted here.

They used to sell the old Streetboard magazine that we used to make back in the day, Suburban Droog. . How long have you been riding?

2003 I got a skinner plastik board for my birthday, 2004 my first “real” streetboard, AS2 with the first version of viking trucks, I broke a pair every week, haha. So, almost 10 years! Damn, time flies by quick…
For sure man, how is the scene different from when you started and now?

It changed a lot. When I started there was one company selling one board, there were only a few videos coming out and people focused on contest riding. Now it’s more about doing videos, nearly every week new footage, that’s awesome. and people begin to work on their style, that’s important I think. When I started skating I used to ask my skateboarding friends why they are not streetboarding instead, one of them told me that skatbeoarding would be more stylish to him… maybe 2003 he was right, but now, when I look at guys like Eric Brun, Ismael Calvo and Andres Rodes, I’m not sure if anybody can beat that.

Do you think that now every man and his dog has a decent video camera, has changed or made it easier to sculpt your style? Everything is now filmed and so riders are a lot more aware of their style and what needs tuning?

Definitely, even mobile phones can make decent videos today, like you said, you get to see your tricks more often and you get to see other peoples riding that can influence your way of riding.
Talking of videos, you’ve been a busy boy recently. First up you dropped a trailer for a street edit. Has it got a name?

No, just began filming, right now I have 3-4 tricks that I will use in the street part. Can’t wait for summer to come and to start filming street again.

Looks like you got some spots out there. Are they all local or you been hitting up some other cities?

Some spots that you could see in the short teaser were in berlin, but I have tons of good spots in my area, if some streetboarder is ever interested in filming some street footage and is willing to travel, he will be welcome here and I’ll show him the spots.
You may just live to regret that when you wake up to find me, a midget and your next door neighbours wife under a pile of empty beer bottles!

That’s the streetboarding way of life, bring it on, haha.

What do you like to hit on Street?
I love handrails. But ledges and manny pads are great fun, too. I don’t often skate gaps, but in the future I would like to improve my level there.
When do you think your street edit will be ready ?

I wanna take my time with this one, so once I’m old I have a part I can look back to and say “that was the best I could do”. Maybe at the end of the year? End of next year? Never? Hard to tell, but hopefully at the end of this year.

Who’s filming for you ?

Some of my skateboarding homies. Especially my friend Lukas was a great help, without him I think I wouldn’t have done my new park edit. Thanks for that!
Ok so talking about your park edit…How long did it take to film?

Most of the filming has been done in 3 days/sessions, but to land the ender it took me 3 more sessions. it was a battle.

450′s are the way, Strapped in and What business right there. How do you view the level of riding in Streetboarding nowadays?

Sick. The time begins where we get our streetboarding exclisive tricks, 450′s in and out, backflip to blunt, monster combos…It’s important to do those tricks to show the potential of the sport. But I’m also sure that this is just the beginning.
Who do you see at the top of the game?

That’s a hard one. Sergi, Max, Gotthard, Eric, Ismael, I really don’t know…each of them has his own “special abilities”.
For the street video, do you have any trips planned?

Barcelona this summer, can’t wait to go there again. It’s gonna be my fourth trip there and definitely not my last one.
What do you do when you’re not 450′ing to slides?
I’m doing my master, when it all goes to plan I’ll work as a teacher in some years. Besides from that I try to live the good life, hang around with friends,my family, my girl and when I’m honest; I can’t ever get streetboarding out of my mind, one of the best things that happened to me.

So tonight saw the sudden release of David La Rotta’s imaginatively titled “Winter Edit”.  I was halfway through trying to add Sergi Nicolas’ earlier Having Words interview with Tricia Dunn, when this piece of obscenity popped on my black mirror.  I almost spat my gravy all over my screen when I saw THAT nosegrind. I wasn’t going to drink tonight, but THAT nosegrind forced me to. In fact, I would quit drinking if all you Streetboarders would stop doing sick tricks, FACT. But I streetboard, and that’s why I drink,  hence the poorly edited, conducted but skilfully copied and pasted Having Words below.  Oh and if you haven’t already shared it yet, here’s the edit and THAT nosegrind.

Alex first crept into my consciousness proper just over a year ago.  I can’t recall whether it was the edits he was throwing out or his riding that meant that his name drifted from the outskirts of my social media vignette and shifted increasingly into focus, but both are now so prevalent in the Streetboard world that the only thing left to do was to have some words.

Ok dude first up how long you been riding?

I’ve been riding for 2 years and a half.

What got you started?

I was searching for a good way to train snowboard tricks out of season, and someone told me that he saw some guys in a skatepark doing amazing tricks and really similar to snowboard tricks, so I start searching information and I fell in love with it. And now I prefer streetboarding than snowboarding.

Where did you get your first board from ?

I get my first board from Drop Inn Shop. It was a Highland Flare 50 with Neobrain bindings.

How similar do you find streetboarding to snowboarding?

I find it really similar in some ways, you’re tied to the board, the balance for the grinds is the same, the rotations… But in other ways they are very different like the way you get speed or the pain when you fall, concrete is harder.

Do you think it is a good cross trainer though?

Mmm… Yes I think is a good way to improve your skills if you can’t afford (or if you don’t want) pay a summer snowboard camp. I’ve improved a lot my snowboard style thanks to streetboard last year.

You ride a lot with Sergi, does he push you to do tricks?

Yes! A lot! As you say now I’m skating a lot with Sergi in the night and he always push me to try new tricks and new spots, sometimes it works and I land a nice trick and sometimes I land a big fail hahah. But I appreciate this a lot.

Yeah I heard you guys skate a lot at night, what time you normally ride until?

We normally ride until 2-3 a.m, but there was a day when we ride until 5 a.m, sick session.

What spot was that ?

You’re a filmer too right?

Yes, I am.


What set up do you use?

I use a Canon HF S100 with a Opteka 0.2X FishEye, a Vanguard Tripod and a couple of led lights.

Who’s your favourite rider to shoot?

Wow, what a difficult question! There are a lot of riders who I love to film. The Eric Brun’s style, the sick tricks of Sergi Nicolas, the Toni Alvarez’s tech tricks… I love to film anyone who puts effort and never gives up.

What about Cristian VanDerberg, Do you guys have rivalry or you get on ok? Do you ever fight at spots for a shot?

We get on very well of course! Normally we film for the same video so it is perfect to be 2 filmers because one can take a fisheye shot and the other one can take a longshot. There are never problems.

Cool, although I was dreaming of you guys going out and sabotaging each other’s shit.  You edit too right?

Yes, I am a videoeditor too.

What makes a good edit for you ?

A good edit must be perfectly planned before start shooting. A story board with the shots, the tricks, the music is the good way to make a good edit. But it’s difficult to do that because you can’t plan everything in streetboarding. So you must find the middle point between planning everything and shot with no idea of what will you do with it.


True words bro. Back to your riding bro.  Tell me about the sofa pic?

Well this picture was taken last week in a night session. That session was quite painfull because I was trying to land a trick for an hour but I fell very hard 7 or 8 times and I give it up due to a capsulitis. I was very sad because of that and the we found this sofa in the street and the idea of the shot was instant. Sergi was really nervous at the start but he trusted in me and all went fine. It’s a different photo in my opinion.

Where did you find the wood?

It’s our local wood jaja. We have it in the Drop Inn.

I love a good no grab, and that pic is a superb example of why.  What’s your favourite trick?

My favourite trick is the BS Rodeo in funbox, and in street FS BS 270 Lip.

Are you working on any special project at the moment? Tricks? Edits? A section?

Yes, of course. Now I’m working in landing FS Rodeo on concrete, because it’s a trick that have been in my head for a long time. And I think that maybe I must start working on a section, but it is always difficult to be the filmer and the rider.

Do you find it hard to concentrate on a shot then to have to go film your own trick.

Yes it is hard, but Sergi and Cristian film me most of the time so I don’t have this problem so often.

Ok my man, I think that we should wrap it up any last words and thank you’s?

Yes, I want to say that streetboard has changed my life, mostly for good, but sometimes for bad. I want to thank to all the homies for accepting me when I’m a noob, to Sergi for being an awesome teacher and for all what he have done for the streetboard, to Toni, Andres, Eric and Cristian for the amazing time we spent skating and chilling; and to all the big family that is the streetboard for do all this things possible.
