This time next week you better either heading your way to Mallorca or in the confession box, for you will have sinned. Finally it’s that time of year again where the whole Streetboard circus focuses it’s attention on one set of coordinates for the World Chamionships. So hold on to your pivots and let the countdown begin!

Where do you hail from?

Germany, near Münster. One of Germany’s skateboarding hot spots.

Who you ride for?

Myself, unfortunately I don’t have any sponsors, but hey, there are worse things in life.

What’s your favourite spot?

One of my favourite spots has been skate-stopped a few years ago, the “famous” dio rail. dude, this was like a handrail that could only exist in your dreams. 6 long stairs, perfect hight and awesome pavement. I had one of those sessions there that I’ll never forget. Good times.

In the moment I have to say that “Forum” in barcelona is my favourite spot, although I can only skate there once a year or less.

In my area its the definitly the skatepark in Münster Gievenbeck (part of the city). Good vibe, nice ramps and relaxed people.

Street or ramp?

When I was younger for sure street. Right now, because of lazyness I think, its more ramp. But I’m down for a good street session anytime.

Favourite trip?

I had two trips to barcelona, 2007/8 and 2009/10. both were awesome, I love this city. Especially the first trip showed me why streetboarding is the best thing ever. I posted in the streetboarding.com forums and got directly an answer from Chris Dedeu. When we arrived in Barca Sergi called us and showed us the city and some spots. I mean, I don’t know many other sports where you have such a familiar scene.

Another good trip was berlin 2005, with Andy Roelfs. We had to sleep together in a tent and you have to know that I have a talent in snoring.

We Got Company….Day One

Companies are the backbone of any scene, any sport, any industry. Never before in the history of Streetboarding have we had so many different brands producing so many diverse products.

We finally have an infrastructure from which we can grow. Everyone needs to support the guys making the effort to support the scene. Most of them are out of pocket, just doing it for the love an the hope that one day history will view them as true pioneers of the sport. In order to give you an insight into the brands that make up the Streetboard scene, we thought we’d periodically run a little interview with the driving forces behind them.

What is Day One about?

Day One is about representing Streetboarding in a positive way and giving the riders a quality brand that they can be proud of.

What new products you got coming up in the next year?

Well we just released the new limited edition Reel Life shirts at the event in Paris last month which have gone down really well and will look to bring out some new shirts and maybe some other stuff later in the year. The big focus right now is the video, the team has been working hard filming their parts for a full length DVD and we hope to have it released as soon as possible however, those who have made video before know how hard it is to put a date on the release so im not going to do that right now. You will just have to be patient.

How long you been running?

Since 2003

How do you go about designing and testing your products?

Quality is always essential in what we do. I have worked really hard to find the best quality and fit for our shirts and i feel that right now we have the best tee’s around. We dont have a huge range of products but with everything we do, we make sure the quality is right so that anyone from the Streetboard scene can feel proud wearing his or her new Tee when rocking up to the skatepark amongst all the other Skateboarders, BMXers etc.

How does your company invest back into streetboarding?

Day One aims to be involved where possible with helping the scene push forward. I feel the Reel Life contest is one of our biggest achievements, we wanted to create a new style of event that would capture the spirit of what Streetboarding is all about. The first event in London in 2009 was a massive success and it has continued to grow for the 2010 contest in Paris. Its already one of the biggest events in the Streetboard calender each year and we aim to continue to grow the contest and take it to different cities each time.

We also started the Overcast UK Video Mag at the start of the year, this was aimed to help the UK scene grow and allow up and coming riders a chance to get themselves noticed. We’re currently working on issue 3 and i have already seen an increase in the level of riding, its been really good to see.

Who’s on your team?

We have a nice eclectic mix of riders on the team. Sam Cooke, Jay Nowman, Eric Brun, Jon White, Simon Johns and myself. Each has their own unique style and i think its going to make for a great video.

Any last words?

Thank you to everyone who has supported Day One, its really great to here all the positive feedback we have had from everyone because Day One exists for you all. Supporting your Streetboard brands is really important in helping the scene grows so please continue to support all the Streetboarding brands out there and don’t be shy, if you have feedback for us, (even if its negative) we want to hear from you.

A few months ago myself and Sam Cooke were out filming for the upcoming Day One video and we decided to film a little of our warm up session. Had it on file for a while, then last night I hit a writer’s block whilst working on Issue 5 of Red Pen Streetboard Magazine. My hands ain’t tickled a timeline in a while so I thought what the heck:

Where are you from ?

I live next to Annecy at the foot of the Alps, but i spend most of the year in Lyon for studies.

When did you started streetboarding ? How did you fall into it ?

I’ve started streetboarding in May 2004 (I still have the Ductil invoice, it was a Dimension AS2) so it was about 6 years ago.

In fact i was surfing the web, and I accidentally saw the first left4dead trailer. I really enjoyed it so I decided to learn streetboard.

I remember my first day on a board, It was raining and I was alone in my garage, trying to find out how to go forward and keeping my balance by grabbing the wall.

It’s maybe the most frustrating step, when you got your brand new board and you can’t go for 2 meters, so you tell yourself : “Why the hell have I bought this !? ”

What’s your current setting ?

I ride a Highland Cartel 55, with wheels full of flat spots and soon to die bindings.

You’ve been quite discreet since your joint part with Folrent in Caution 3, what happened since then ?

True, i did very few videos and not many events, but I was still skating.

Since the start of the year, I did not skate so much by lack of motivation mainly, I got back on my board for summer, I had few interesting sessions, I entered the REEL LIFE 2010, which really motivate me to start riding regularly, and will be in Mallorca this year.

Park or street ?

I ‘ve a taste for the street aspect of streetboarding, but as most riders i skate much more into skate parks than into « real street », even though I love skating rails and gap from time to time .

For me real street session are mostly for filming, it’s not that easy to find good spots.

In Annecy, we’ve got a nice concrete park (kind of a skate plaza), it’s a good mix between park and street, it’s a real street spot without all the disadvantages : no security guards, no angry grandmas, no cars or pedestrians to avoid, it’s well buit, you’ve got room to take speed and land, it’s perfect .

What’s your best streetboard related memory ?

Ah, It’s hard to stick with one only, I’ve got lots af good memories of all the events I took part in.

The first one was the meeting in Lyon 2004 I was very impressed to ride with all the guys I had seen in the videos ( Sergi, Vianney,Hadrien…) .

I was at worlds 2005 also, it was huge, the level of riding was really high. I also remember 50 drunk streetboarders partying in Lyon’s streets.

The team battle in Nantes 2006 was cool too, it was called « la bataille française » we scored 2nd with Nico Szasz and Florent Baldino, Ductil was 1st . The ambience bettween the riders was good.

I had good time too with the ex Disaster team (wich i was in) with Nico, Flo, Testu, Tonio and Olivier) specially in La Plagne. I still skate from time to time with Florent, it’s always a good sesh with him.

Recently, I really enjoyed competing for the REEL LIFE with anti-Ductil, the scheme of the contest is good, we had fun and our video wasn’t bad , we scored 1st.

If you could change a thing in the sport, what would it be ?

Even though I like the friendly aspect of a small scene, I think that more riders would be better. If each country could have an active scene and few events, a good boards distribution…

When a kids ask you where to get a streetboard and you don’t know what to answer, it’s not good.

Beside of that, the sport is perfect.

I don’t have one, but recently i’ve worked on variations around Boardslides and lipslides (front/back/switch/ 270 in and out). I like tech tricks.
