Easy mate, what’s your full name?

Marek Makowska

Tail Grab

Where do you hail from?

Germany, near Münster. One of Germany’s skateboarding hot spots.

gap_2

Stink Indy

Who you ride for?

Myself, unfortunately I don’t have any sponsors, but hey, there are worse things in life.

What’s your favourite spot?

One of my favourite spots has been skate-stopped a few years ago, the “famous” dio rail. dude, this was like a handrail that could only exist in your dreams. 6 long stairs, perfect hight and awesome pavement. I had one of those sessions there that I’ll never forget. Good times.

In the moment I have to say that “Forum” in barcelona is my favourite spot, although I can only skate there once a year or less.

In my area its the definitly the skatepark in Münster Gievenbeck (part of the city). Good vibe, nice ramps and relaxed people.

bs_lipslide

Street or ramp?

When I was younger for sure street. Right now, because of lazyness I think, its more ramp. But I’m down for a good street session anytime.

Favourite trip?

I had two trips to barcelona, 2007/8 and 2009/10. both were awesome, I love this city. Especially  the first trip showed me why streetboarding is the best thing ever. I posted in the streetboarding.com forums and got directly an answer from Chris Dedeu. When we arrived in Barca Sergi called us and showed us the city and some spots. I mean, I  don’t know many other sports where you have such a familiar scene.

Another good trip was berlin 2005, with Andy Roelfs. We had to sleep together in a tent and you have to know that I have a talent in snoring.

Any Thank Yous?

Yes, thanks for all the good sessions (more to come…): Kowpel (you need to skate more dude), Tommy, Alex Te, Philipp Z, Andy, the skatepark locals (Timow, Mirco, Maik, Skatefurt …), my brother, any streetboarder I ever skated with. Thanks for filming: Nils & Lukas (we need to film more).   Thanks for keeping the scene alive in germany: Thomas Kienle .  Thanks to my girlfriend for knowing the difference between boardslides and lipslides and for sure the whole streetboard scene

We Got Company….Day One

Filed under: Exclusives, Home — Jay Nowman at 8:47 pm on Monday, August 9, 2010

Companies are the backbone of any scene, any sport, any industry. Never before in the history of Streetboarding have we had so many different brands producing so many diverse products.

We finally have an infrastructure from which we can grow. Everyone needs to support the guys making the effort to support the scene. Most of them are out of pocket, just doing it for the love an the hope that one day history will view them as true pioneers of the sport. In order to give you an insight into the brands that make up the Streetboard scene, we thought we’d periodically run a little interview with the driving forces behind them.

Welcome to:

wegotcompany

main-pic-collage

What is Day One about?

Day One is about representing Streetboarding in a positive way and giving the riders a quality brand that they can be proud of.

What new products you got coming up in the next year?

Well we just released the new limited edition Reel Life shirts at the event in Paris last month which have gone down really well and will look to bring out some new shirts and maybe some other stuff later in the year.  The big focus right now is the video, the team has been working hard filming their parts for a full length DVD and we hope to have it released as soon as possible however, those who have made video before know how hard it is to put a date on the release so im not going to do that right now.  You will just have to be patient.

How long you been running?

Since 2003

How do you go about designing and testing your products?

Quality is always essential in what we do.  I have worked really hard to find the best quality and fit for our shirts and i feel that right now we have the best tee’s around.  We dont have a huge range of products but with everything we do, we make sure the quality is right so that anyone from the Streetboard scene can feel proud wearing his or her new Tee when rocking up to the skatepark amongst all the other Skateboarders, BMXers etc.

How does your company invest back into streetboarding?

Day One aims to be involved where possible with helping the scene push forward.  I feel the Reel Life contest is one of our biggest achievements, we wanted to create a new style of event that would capture the spirit of what Streetboarding is all about.  The first event in London in 2009 was a massive success and it has continued to grow for the 2010 contest in Paris.  Its already one of the biggest events in the Streetboard calender each year and we aim to continue to grow the contest and take it to different cities each time.

We also started the Overcast UK Video Mag at the start of the year, this was aimed to help the UK scene grow and allow up and coming riders a chance to get themselves noticed.  We’re currently working on issue 3 and i have already seen an increase in the level of riding, its been really good to see.

Who’s on your team?
We have a nice eclectic mix of riders on the team.  Sam Cooke, Jay Nowman, Eric Brun, Jon White, Simon Johns and myself.  Each has their own unique style and i think its going to make for a great video.
dsc_02351
Any last words?

Thank you to everyone who has supported Day One, its really great to here all the positive feedback we have had from everyone because Day One exists for you all.  Supporting your Streetboard brands is really important in helping the scene grows so please continue to support all the Streetboarding brands out there and don’t be shy, if you have feedback for us, (even if its negative) we want to hear from you.

Andy Garret Interview

back-to-the-garretBeing part of this Streetboard scene brings many things. Ask any of the riders who have been blessed to be a part of the scene for any amount of time what the best thing is and you will get the same answer time and time again: Friendship.

Last Friday brought this home for mr when when me and a tight crew (Day One’s Colin Horan and Project Streetboard Event’s Paul Nash) left our boards at home and ventured onto the waters of the Thames to celebrate Andy Garret’s birthday.

The back of a Hackney Carrage provided us with the opportunity to get a few words in with the birthday boy himself- check it out:

DOW 2010 - Report

Gotthard Flying high at Dudelange On Wheels 2010

Report by: Gotthard Pilsner

Finally the Summer is here and he brought us a perfect weekend in Luxemburg on the famous DOW. It is always one of the best competitions in the year ……cold beer , good friends , stunning girls , nice skatepark and hilarious partys-and this time we wouldn,t be disapointed either !

This year it was time for the “next generation” to offer there skills and proof themself in a competition with a pretty high Level….And i must say that the future looks bright. Having a bunch of Snowboarders getting crazy on their Streetboards , we saw the cleanest spins ever and finally witnessed a landed backside Rodeo in competition again .
But the old guys are not ready to give the scepter out of their hands yet.

Thomas Trefzer was flying trough the hole park like the tazmanian devil while the sun burned with 38 degrees mercilessly on our scalps.

untitled

Kai was doing crazy manuals , I still don’t even get them now . After another long term of injury Gust is back on the board and it doesn’t even seem like he’s been off his board for the last couple of years , damn this guy is on fire again .Christoph Böckeler land a sick transfer Noseslide what is actually not possible to master.

Georg Mayerhauser assured with some tech skating , high 540`s and his famous Invert. With solid lines , 360 crooks an almost sunstroke Gotthard Pilsner won just ahead of Thomas and Georg .

Another year where Streetboarding was the star turn in Luxemburg …and guys , watch out for the young generation. They`re chasing after us !

An Open Letter to Streetboarders….

Dear Friends.

I hope all is well.

I’m writing to you all because I want your help with Red Pen Streetboard Magazine.

Please take your time to read this and please do respond to me …I’d really like you ALL to be involved.

Email me back on info@redpenmag.com

As you know - we make no money out of running the mag.  We run it and the site entirely because we believe it is something the Streetboard scene needs for it to grow. That is the reason the magazine is free.

Why charge for the magazine when it is a lot more beneficial to the growth of the sport when you can give it away for free to anyone that is interested in the sport?

We now are looking to expand our role within the scene, but to do this we need your help.   Your help however will, as I’ll explain, only serve to help you.

First up i’d like to speak about the website.

Whether you run a company, are a seasoned pro, a contest organiser, video editor or are an up and coming rider you need a way to promote your product, film, your sponsors and yourself.

Right now the online Streetboard presence is strong, but fractured.  Surely it serves everybody involved in the scene to have a central place to show off your goods.

If we want to attract money and media interest from outside of the scene, we need to show that we are a happening scene, with high hit rates.

I believe this is where Red Pen’s online presence comes into play.

Look at any extreme sport scene.  Which websites are the main one’s you check for the latest info and news?

The Magazines’ sites.  Red Pen Streetboard Magazine is therefore the natural place for this central hub to be.

What’s the point in everybody posting pics and vids on facebook, when the only people who get to see it are your “Friends”, all of whom already know you streetboard and know about the sport?

Surely you will look cooler to your mates if you get it posted on an official magazine’s site then LINK to it from your page?

Surely the girl that you gave a copy of Red Pen to at the skate park will DEFINITELY get jiggy with you when she log’s on to the redpenmag.com and see’s how big your stiffy’s are?

Do you want your product launch on a random site with 100 regular users or one with 1000’s?

You want to get sponsored or sponsorship for and event.  What are you going to say when they ask you about exposure for their company?  ”i’ve got 500 friends on FB and I know that a few people check me when i ride”

Surely it benefits everyone involved that we have a central place to release pics and video, promote events and promote riders.

It strengthens all of ours cases when trying to pull this sport out of obscurity.

Like I said - Red Pen is not here to make money.  It’s here to help the scene.

Red Pen is not mine…

Red Pen is yours,

It’s ours.

What do we want you to do?

Well - before you post that vid, exclusive product, pictures on Facebook or anywhere else just stop and think: “Wait a minute… this would be better on Red Pen.”

Then you have two options.

ANYBODY, if you feel you will be posting regularly, I have no problems giving you a log in to the site so you can become and official reporter.  Just email me now and i’lll set it up.

If you don’t feel ready for this, then just email me on info@redpenmag.com .

You want an interview?  Don’t wait for me to ask you, just go get some sick pics and mail me.

DO NOT POST THE PICS ON FACEBOOK.

IF THE PICS ARE GOOD ENOUGH - WE”LL SAVE IT FOR THE MAGAZINE.  IF NOT THEY”LL BE ONLINE.

I can’t be everywhere and can’t cover everything.  The less time I have to spend thinking of new articles for the site, the more I can concentrate on the Magazine.

The site is about to get a redesign and the magazine will now be coming out a lot more regularly.  Next  year we want 4 issues.  This year we are aiming for two more.

I don’t want me and Sam to write all the articles.  I WANT YOU to be writing the articles.  You have a good idea or a good trip planned - take pics and get it to us.

I really hope to hear from a lot of you.  I want people from each streetboard scene to become regular reporters.  Guys- I don’t know what’s going on in Japan, in Guatamala, but I do care and it should be in Red Pen just as mush as European stuff.

I just need you guys to be reporting on it.

Please get in touch and as soon as possible I will sort you out with a login.

Lets grow this Streetboard thing.

Keep the heart and see as many as possible of you at Worlds 2010.

Enough Love

NeveWear get Inspected….

I have to admit I was hesitant at first. I  thought about it for a minute, then threw caution to the wind and dived right in.  I mean this is what I do. I risk everything, do all that dangerous stuff like sending emails and asking questions, all in the name of informing you, the streetboarding masses (ha ha - you’ve got to love an in joke).

So often do I hear of new Streetboard related companies starting then never amounting to anything.  This time though I was more than pleasantly surprised.  NeveWear look the business, talk the talk, and I’m sure if I saw them walking down the street they’d be walking the walk. Read on to discover more….

Interview: Jay Nowman Pics: Neve Wear

So, I’m guessing you guys are a clothing company.  Give us a brief run down of NeveWear.

We have been around for almost a year now and we are focusing on streetboarding in every aspect. We are currently one of the few companies that sells streetboards in the US and were trying to share the love with everyone. Oh, and yeah we’re a clothing company. We are coming out with a fresh batch gnarly shirts!

Where are you guys based?

We are currently based in in Utah, Salt Lake City which is known for Mormons and the best snow on earth.  But we have an online store which is focused to all of the US.

Oh yeah? So you guys know Brinton Gunderson?

Well I dont exactly know him per say, but I have heard of him. Now days I believe he is out in Cali. where Dimensions is located.
(Actually guys he’s still in Utah last time I spoke to him - Jay)

n-shirt

How did you get into Streetboarding?  Do you ride yourselves?
I actually got into streetboarding by chance, I saw a video on youtube and it rocked my socks.  I started talking to Neil from highland and he hooked me up with some boards to ride and we turned into our own little company. Now all the friends are tearing it up on boards as well!

Awesome man. How’s the scene out in Utah? Many riders?

There are not to many riders out here in Utah, in fact I have never ran into someone I dont know riding a board. It is kind of sad but we are working on creating interest out here in the states. We seem to get a lot of interest at the skateparks especially now that we can actually throw some gnarly stuff.

Who’s on your team?

Well thats a good question that I dont really have the answer to, if you could throw some pros our way it would be much appreciated. But I guess I will consider myself as well as Justin Woods and Dustin Webb currently rocking our gear.

Are you just going to sell in the USA?

We are focusing on the US for now but we would definitely like to get into some international stuff down the road. But anyone interested in any of our stuff outside the US is more then welcome to contact us and we will work with them.

city-shirts

Any plans for an international team?

Well yes, but we have to start here first and work our way up.

Thanks for your time. Any shouts?

Well you’ve always got to thanks your parents for everything right, especially in our case since their the ones that got us on our feet. Highland for making some sick boards, Dustin, Justin for taking so much time to get things up and running and showing off the boards everywhere and Josh, who is our artist, for being able to put together some sick clothes.
